| CBS News has learned a second Inspector General (IG) is investigating Operation Fast and Furious: Homeland Security. As CBS News previously reported, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) had special agents from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) assigned to Fast and Furious, which was run by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) out of Phoenix, Ariz. During that case and similar weapons trafficking operations, ATF allowed thousands of weapons to fall into the hands of Mexican drug cartels. The idea was to capture the "big fish" in a cartel. The strategy was called to an abrupt halt after... |

The congressional investigations into the gunwalking plot known as Operation Fast and Furious largely faded from the public eye over the past month, yet there is a growing conviction among legislators of both parties that a grueling political battle is ahead. Those determined to uncover the truth behind Fast and Furious are being opposed by Democratic congressmen and Obama administration officials such as Deputy Attorney General James Cole. Cole has objected to the House Oversight Committeeâs investigation and the actions of Oversight Chairman Darrell Issa. His recent... |

| House Speaker John Boehner, Majority Leader Eric Cantor and Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy joined Rep. Darrell Issa last week to once again demand Attorney General Eric Holder come clean about his involvement in Operation Fast and Furious. The Republican leadership signed a May 18 letter asking more questions of the US Attorney General who has refused to provide subpoenaed documents to congressional investigators. The back-and-forth correspondence over the past 16 months may in the end provide a useful record of an Obama administration program which led to hundreds of murders. But for now the letters are little more than posturing... |
Fast and Furious: Why Eric Holder Will Lose the Legal Fight
Sunday 27th of May 2012 08:59:18 AM

| Federal courts could soon decide a fight between Congress and Attorney General Eric Holder on the Operation Fast and Furious gun-running scandal. If Republicans persevere, this is a battle that Holder should lose in what would be a humiliating defeat for President Barack Obama. Most Americans have now heard that our government allowed drug cartels to illegally smuggle thousands of guns from the U.S. into Mexico. The National Rifle Association has relentlessly pursued the White House and Department of Justice (DOJ) about Fast and Furious for over a year, and the massive gun-rights organization has only increased its focus in... |

When the crime is running guns to drug cartels on both sides of the border, the crime involves the murder of a U.S. Border Patrol officer, Brian Terry, Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent, Jaime Zapata, and countless Mexican citizens. Katie Pavlich has written an extraordinary expose, "Fast and Furious: Barack Obama's Bloodiest Scandal and its Shameless Cover-Up" (Regnery Publishing). | WASHINGTON - The one thing the salesman at JJ's Pawn Shop in Beaumont remembered about Robert Riendfliesh from the day he picked up an order of 10 AK-47s was his military-style camouflage hat. An Army veteran of the Iraq War, Riendfliesh was familiar with weapons like the Romanian-made 7.62 semi-automatic, capable of firing 30 rounds in under a minute. But Riendfliesh, 25, wasn't buying the guns for himself. Records show they were for "Manny," a drug dealer who had promised him $650 in cash. Six months later, ballistics tests proved one of the weapons Riendfliesh bought was used Feb. 15,... |

But the vehicle had a basic, fatal flaw. Forced off the road in a well-coordinated ambush, surrounded by drug cartel gunmen brandishing AK-47s, Zapata and his partner, Victor Avila, rolled to a stop.
